| Thirty seven years ago, two St. Clair Shores Police Officers, John St. Germaine and Fred Marengo, were dispatched to a home in St. Clair Shores. While at this home, they noticed a Christmas tree but no presents. These officers knew that there were children in the home and could not help wonder why presents were not there. They found that the family was in a crisis and could not afford Christmas presents for the children. These officers had children of their own and could not bare the thought of a child without a toy for Christmas. Both officers went to their homes and wrapped presents to be delivered to this family. Christmas was saved for this family and a tradition was started in St. Clair Shores. “COPS FOR KIDS” was born out of this kind act by these two officers. The tradition caught on and many other officers began helping and delivering toys and food to needy families in St. Clair Shores. Over the years, many patrons have come forward to assist in helping the cause. We have had telethons on the local cable channels, sponsored golf outings, hockey games with the Detroit Red Wings, as well as many other fund raisers. The “COPS FOR KIDS” Organization is a 100% volunteer program and all monies collected go directly to the families in need in St. Clair Shores. This program has evolved where it is now a 12-month effort to assist families in need. We have sent children to camp in the summer, helped families in medical crisis, supported high school students with a scholarship program aimed at Criminal Justice and Fire Science Studies, and still make sure that no child goes without a Christmas. |
